NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee or sometimes people say it stands for National Aboriginal and Islanders Day of Celebration, either way it is a week long celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture that showcases our beautiful culture, traditions, food, craftsmanship and so much more!

 

Its origins can be traced back to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s who sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians- our staunch ancestors!

Typically, NAIDOC Week is held in the first full week of July, however in areas where July triggers FREEZING weather, the activities can actually take place in September- allowing all our mob to take part out in the beautiful sunshine!

 

It is a time to come together and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society. The Wagga Wagga NAIDOC Committee strongly encourages all Australians to get amongst it and participate in the celebrations and activities that take place across our city (and the nation) during NAIDOC Week.
