Wagga NAIDOC Awards 2024

This year, the following categories will be awarded to the successful recipients as nominated by you!

The Wagga NAIDOC Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors of our awards- Cleanaway, Beyond Bank, Mission Australia, Argyle Housing and Wagga Wagga City Council.

Wagga NAIDOC Award Guidelines 

 

Wagga Wagga has an Aboriginal population of approximately 3,509 people equating to over 8.4% of the total population. NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture within our community, highlight the successes of our community members and celebrate our heritage. 

 

Eligibility 

 

Nominees must: 

 

  • Be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and must be accepted as such in the local community.

  • Live in the Wagga Wagga LGA.

  • Demonstrate above and beyond dedication and commitment to the chosen category. 

  • Must not have received the award in previous years.

 

Please note: 

  • Self nominations will not be accepted. 

  • All award categories are for ages 18 and over. Young Person of the Year Award is awarded to people 18-25yrs. 

  • Unsuccessful nominees may be re-nominated in following years. 

  • Individuals can be nominated for only one category per nomination form. For multiple categories you will need to fill out another nomination form per category.

  • Groups are eligible for nomination. 

  • Nominators can be both Aboriginal or non-Aboriginal. 

  • Nominators must complete the nomination form and return to the Wagga NAIDOC Committee by the due date. No late entries will be accepted. 

  • An individual need only be nominated once to be considered. The number of nominations received per nominee bears no weight in their selection. 

  • If a category receives zero nominations that award will be voided for 2024.

Nomination & Selection Process and Timeline 

 

May 9          The NAIDOC Committee will call for nominations from the community and open nominations on the website.

June 7         Nominations close.

June 10        All nominations will be reviewed by the Wagga NAIDOC Committee and selection panel.

June 12        All nominees will be notified by phone and/or email.

July 6           Award winners are announced at the Wagga NAIDOC Ball.

 

Conflict of Interest 

 

If a NAIDOC Committee member or member of the selection panel is a nominee, the member must not be a part of reviewing, discussions or voting in their chosen category to ensure transparency and equal opportunity to other nominees. 

 

Committee members and selection panel members are to make clear any strong friendship or family connection they may have with a person under consideration for an award, and excuse themselves from discussions regarding that nominee and award category. All nominations, deliberations and results will remain strictly confidential. 

 

Selection Criteria 

 

Nominees must: 

 

  1. Demonstrate excellence in category field. 

  2. Show a significant contribution to the Aboriginal community. 

  3. Be an inspirational and positive role model for the Aboriginal community. 

 

When selecting NAIDOC Award winners, the selection panel may take into consider details in nomination form regarding: 

 

  • Voluntary work beyond paid employment 

  • Previous awards and recognition 

  • Achievements as an individual or as part of a group or organisation 

  • Demonstrated leadership 

  • Contribution to the development of the local Aboriginal community 

  • Personal, academic and professional achievements of the nominee 

  • How the nominee 'gives back' to the community to benefit others 

  • Personal interests and community involvement 

  • Future goals and likely impact 

  • Degree of difficulty of the achievement and sacrifices made 

Award Category Criteria 

 

Community Person of the Year Award

  • Is this person well respected in the Aboriginal community? 

  • Is this person a positive role model? 

  • Does this person demonstrate a commitment to our local community? 

  • Are they involved with local events, programs, projects and/or meetings etc? 

  • Does this person volunteer for various activities within the community? 

  • Does this person display leadership skills? 

Blak, Loud & Proud! Award

  • Is this person a leader in the Aboriginal community?

  • Is this person a positive role model? 

  • Does this person stand tall in their heritage?

  • Does this person show an unwavering commitment to justice and equality?

  • Does this person show a commitment to acknowledging, preserving, and sharing the cultural heritage that enriches our nation?

 

Young Person of the Year Award (18-25yrs) 

  • Does this person demonstrate a commitment to the local Aboriginal community? 

  • Are they involved with local events, programs, projects and/or meetings? 

  • Does this person volunteer for various activities? 

  • Does this person display leadership skills? 

  • Is this young person a role model for their generation and younger generations? 

Caring for Country & Culture Award 

  • Does this person demonstrate a commitment to caring for country? 

  • Are they involved with local events, programs, projects and/or meetings? 

  • Does this person volunteer for various activities? 

  • Does this person display leadership skills? 

  • Is this person positive a role model? 

Lifetime Achievement Award 

  • Has this person demonstrated a long standing commitment to the local Aboriginal community? 

  • Are they involved with local events, programs, projects and/or meetings? 

  • Does this person volunteer for various activities? 

  • Does this person display leadership skills? 

  • Is this person a positive role model? 

Notification Process 

 

Once the successful award recipients have been selected, the committee will make contact (via phone in first instance followed by email) with each nominee to notify them of their nomination. 

 

Awards

Successful recipients will receive an award and will receive recognition on the Wagga NAIDOC Committee website, social media pages and other elements of promotion.
